VoWiFi

  • Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) is a term typically to describe the delivery of voice call services using Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies from mobile devices connected across WiFi.

  • Effective 16 December 2021, all Maxis Postpaid and Hotlink customers who will be provisioned with VoWiFi service with the exception of customers on multi SIM one line (MISM). Do check if your phone is compatible over Maxis VoWiFi.

  • Most notably, Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) allows user to receive and make call over a WiFi network on your Maxis mobile line, when mobile signal is limited or absent. It is a simple direct dial, as long as you are having a compatible phone and have turned on WiFi -Calling at your phone. Beside this, it will be a seamless handover where user stays connected in an active call when moving to a strong 4G coverage but weak in WiFi signal.

  • VoWiFi has dependency on WiFi network as WiFi connections may lag with inadequate signal strength especially crowded venues, i.e. malls, hotels, airports, universities & cafe.

    As VoWiFi is an IP call, hence seamless handover to cellular call at 2G coverage area is not possible when user move to a weak WiFi signal corner but with 2G coverage only.

    Apart from this, some devices do not support VoWiFi, hence you need to have a compatible phone before using this service.

    1. All iPhone 6S and above that are running the latest iOS version.

    2. Selected Android mobile devices.

  • Different phone may have different steps to enable VoWiFi.

    In general:

    From your phone, click at SETTINGS > MOBILE NETWORK > Enable WiFi Calling/VoWiFi

    If your phone does not have this option, it may not support Maxis VoWiFi, do ensure that your phone is updated with the latest software.

  • You do not have to change your SIM card to enjoy VoWiFi, provided your SIM card is an LTE-SIM.

  • Calls within Malaysia will be charged according to the standard call rates according to your rateplan.

    If your Mobile plan is bundled with voice minutes, VoWiFi calls will utilize those minutes. In the absence of bundled voice minutes, you will be charged at Pay-Per-Use rate.

  • VoWiFi calls do not utilize any data quota allocated to you under your mobile plan.

  • Yes, you can make international call or internal direct dial (IDD) with VoWiFi and will be charged according to your rate plan or standard rates. 

  • VoWiFi while roaming is not available. 

    • VoLTE is referred as Voice Over 4G LTE network, it offers superior voice quality as compared to VoWiFi. Users can still have their data on while being on a call. It has the multitasked capabilities with apps, such as video calling, multimedia file sharing, images and phone calls simultaneously at the fastest speed.
    • VoWiFi uses the WiFi network to make calls on HD. VoWiFi improves call reliability indoors, regardless of your mobile signal strength.
  • Yes, if you have been using VoLTE and enabled VoWiFi on your phone settings, you may make and receiving calls over WiFi network.

  • No. MISM is not supporting both VoLTE and VoWiFi calls.

  • iPhone 12 is compatible with Maxis VoWiFi with the latest version of software. Once your iPhone is updated with the latest software, please go to settings, tap on Mobile Data, then tap WiFi Calling to enable the service.   

  • You should be able to use the service with any WiFi signals; it is also subject to WiFi  service provider as voice calls can be blocked by the WiFi provider with router configuration. 

  • Yes, you are able to make VoWiFi call and browsing at the same time as long you connected to a WiFi network. 

  • Yes, Call waiting and call holding features are expected to work as per normal. 

  • Yes, Call Forwarding is voice call feature, it is not related to VoWiFi.

  • Video calls are based on device capabilities and yes, you can do video call with VoWiFi if your device supports video call.

  • First of all, do check if your phone model is compatible with Maxis VoWiFi and updated with latest software/firmware update, if yes, please go to setting and check if WiFi -Calling has been enabled. 

  • You must be connected to WiFi network to use VoWiFi. Please check if you are logged in to your friend’s home WiFi network.
