If you plan to stay connected only for calls and SMS, then keep your data roaming setting on your phone OFF.

There are a few possible reasons to this. You may want to check on:
- Your phone's data roaming setting.
- be sure you are connected to the right roaming partner mentioned in the Welcome SMS.
- do check data roaming availability in the country. Note that some countries may not allow data roaming, such as Myanmar, and in certain areas of South Thailand, roaming may be blocked by local authorities.
- Data roaming may be blocked due to unfavourable rates. In some countries, data roaming can be very expensive. To prevent usage without awareness of the high costs, data roaming may be blocked.
-
Australian Government had authorized to disable 3G service effective 28 October 2024. Along with a new legislation, that only phones connected to Australian networks must be able to make emergency Triple Zero (000) calls over 4G. This change had also affected the roaming requirements for travellers coming to Australia.
The impact:
Impact on Maxis users with active International Roaming service may experience inability to connect to local network even with 4G device and inability to make or receive calls and SMS without data.
To confirm if your device meets the requirement, you may check your device IMEI on this link: https://amta.org.au/3g-closure-old/check-my-device/
Steps to get your phone’s IMEI:
- Android: Phone Setting > About Phone
- iPhone: Phone Setting > General > About
More about VoLTE and how to activate on your device refer here.
If your device is not compatible, alternatively, you can opt for Whatsapp call & messages over Wi-Fi connections.
-

- Do not send unimportant outgoing SMS*.
- Do not answer unimportant incoming call (answering calls while roaming is chargeable based on incoming call rates).
