Maxis Explores Smart City Partnership Opportunities With Penang State Government

Inspired by Penang State Government’s aspirations to become a family-focused, green and smart state in line with its Vision 2030, Maxis today showcased its capabilities in end-to-end digital solutions particularly in Internet of Things (IoT) in a Tech Forum organised by the State.

The forum, entitled Penang: Beyond Smart Government and Smart Network for a Better World, saw key stakeholders from the state government engaging in a dialogue around criteria and requirements of Penang’s Vision 2030 and Smart City Blueprint. This included key ingredients needed for the successful development of policies, initiatives and programmes for the state and subsequent implementation of Smart City elements and applications.

Present to officiate the event was Yang Berhormat Tuan Jagdeep Singh Deo, EXCO of Local Division, Housing and Town & Country Planning of Penang. Also present was Yang Berusaha Encik Al-Ishsal Ishak, Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and representatives from the State Government. Maxis was represented byTan Lay Han, its Head of Sales and Service.

“Penang aims to become a state of equal standing with smart cities around the world and be the talk of the global community, in line with Malaysia’s digital transformation agenda as well as Industry 4.0. The State Government welcomes ideas and collaboration from all players to achieve this goal. I hope today’s programme will be a stepping stone for closer cooperation between the State Government, MCMC and Maxis, and I would like to thank Maxis and everyone who are here for their support and contribution towards this common goal,” said YB Tuan Jagdeep Singh Deo.

“This is an important initiative as it demonstrates a shared vision between business and government. We applaud the Penang State Government’s efforts for its foresight and leveraging the power of technology to achieve its vision 2030, and we are eager to play an instrumental role in their journey towards their ambitions. Maxis already has a strong presence in Penang with close to 100% 4G population coverage, so this forum is a positive step forward for us as we look towards becoming a preferred partner in connectivity and digital solutions,” said Tan Lay Han.

Maxis’ 4G LTE network leadership in terms of speed, performance and experience is attested by MCMC’ 2018 Network Performance Report. Cementing this leadership position further, Maxis commenced the first 5G live trials in the country in Cyberjaya last week and is evolving its network infrastructure to be ready for a future where smart solutions will be a part of everyday life.

Maxis has also been championing IoT adoption in Malaysia, by helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and larger enterprises kick-start their digital transformation with various IoT solutions. For example, companies are using the technology to manage their workforce and keep track of their business fleets. The telco also established an IoT Innovation Laboratory in Kuala Lumpur, where applications are being tested including agriculture soil and water measurement, smart utilities (water and electric), asset tracking, and smart parking, among others.
