Melaka ICT Holdings (MICTH), the infrastructure and telecommunications development arm of the Melaka state government, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maxis, Malaysia’s leading integrated telco, to enhance broadband connectivity infrastructure for people and businesses in the state.
As the preferred technology partner, Maxis will contribute its expertise to further develop connectivity infrastructure in Melaka. This includes increasing broadband capacity through fiberisation of mobile sites, as well as expanding fibre to the premise (FTTP) coverage for homes and businesses. In addition, Maxis will work with MICTH to enhance digital connectivity and services at public offices and community centres.
The collaboration aims to catalyse digitalisation across the state in line with the Smart Melaka Blueprint 2035, which outlines the state government’s strategic vision to realise Melaka’s Smart City digital transformation agenda.
The MoU exchange between MICTH and Maxis was witnessed by Chief Minister of Melaka YAB Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh at the launch of the Smart Melaka International Conference & Exhibition 2024 (SMIX2024) today. MICTH was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Nazdiana Ab. Wahab, whilst Maxis was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Goh Seow Eng.
“We look forward to collaborating with Maxis through our shared commitment to develop the right telecommunications infrastructure to meet the current and future needs of Melaka. Together, we can explore new and innovative ways to drive the state’s digital transformation, strengthening Melaka’s position as a hub for business and tourism. This will support the creation of an inclusive, vibrant and thriving economy as envisioned by the Melaka state government in the Smart Melaka Blueprint 2035.” - Dr. Nazdiana Ab. Wahab, CEO of MICTH
“Together with MICTH, we look forward to further enhancing broadband connectivity for people and businesses across Melaka. We already have a longstanding presence in the state, providing fast, secure and reliable connectivity through our existing mobile and fibre networks. This partnership also marks the latest milestone in our commitment to support Malaysia’s digital agenda. As part of this commitment, we will continue to explore future-ready use cases such as Smart City and industry solutions powered by 5G-Advanced (5G-A) technology.” - Goh Seow Eng, CEO of Maxis
Maxis’ collaboration with MICTH is in line with its ongoing effort to promote 5G-A Smart City solutions that will leverage the ultrafast speeds and lower latency provided by next generation connectivity. These include exploring 5G-A use cases to benefit local governments and property developments, and working with technology partners on joint 5G-A innovation to benefit businesses and industries.
The Smart Melaka Blueprint 2035 sets out the state’s aspiration to become a fully transformed smart city in the next decade. The blueprint focuses on harnessing technology, innovation, and sustainable development to improve quality of life, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. This includes leveraging smart initiatives and greater data empowerment to accelerate Melaka’s transition towards a complete Smart City ecosystem.
