Before Travelling

  • By default, this service should be active. To check, use the Maxis app or the Maxis Care portal. Just select the line or service that you want to use for roaming, tap on Service Details, tap on Value Added Services, and check if the Roaming box is checked.

For principal line users, assist supplementary users to activate roaming as well.

  • Suitable Data Package

Find data package options for your destination. On Maxis app, tap on “Roaming” and search the country you will be visiting for passes and rates for type of services offered.

  • To turn off these add-on services on the Maxis app, just select the line that you want to use for roaming, tap on Service Details, tap on Value Added Services, and check off the boxes for “Call Forwarding” and “Voice Mail and Missed Call Notification”.

  • Use airplane mode during flights, in transit, or on cruises to prevent extra fees.

  • Turn on mobile data only when needed. Navigate to Settings > Mobile Network > Data Roaming.

  • Ensure Sufficient Credit

Check unbilled usage, overdue charges, and credit limit on the Maxis app. To check, go to “Bill”, select your account for your bill details.

Pay overdue charges and increase credit limit if necessary.

While Abroad

  • Activate mobile data roaming only when necessary to avoid excessive data usage.

  • Check available data roam passes that suit your trip duration and needs.

  • Acticate Long Validity Pass

Consider activating a long validity pass for more data and flexibility.

  • Maxis Data Roaming passes do not apply to Maritime and OnAir/Aeromobile usages.

If near borders, be mindful of automatic network switching to avoid unexpected charges.

After Returning to Malaysia

  • After Returning Malaysia

If you turned them off before your trip, do remember to turn them back on.

  • If you're near borders, disable international roaming via the Maxis app to avoid unwanted charges.

Staying connected while roaming is essential for travelers. If you face challenges
connecting to a network, follow these steps to resolve most issues.

General Troubleshooting Steps

  • Turn off your mobile device, wait for about 10 seconds, then turn it back on. This can often resolve connectivity issues.

  • Ensure international roaming is activated for your line.

Open the Maxis app, select the line you want to enable for roaming, tap on "Service Details," choose "Value Added Services," and check the box for International Roaming.

If you have supplementary lines, only the principal account holder can activate or deactivate International Roaming. Go to "All Services," select the supplementary line, and follow the same steps.

  • Check if international roaming is available in your current location. Some regions may block data roaming (e.g., Myanmar) or may not support it at all (e.g., Yala, Narathiwat & Pattani in Thailand).

Refer to the list of roaming countries on the Maxis website or app for more information.

Device and Network Settings

  • Ensure your device is set to automatically select a network. If you cannot make calls or access data, try manually selecting another network.

  • Make sure airplane mode is disabled on your device.

  • Ensure Sufficient Credit

If your account is overdue or has exceeded the credit limit, your service may be restricted. Make an immediate payment through the Maxis app or contact *123# for payment arrangements.

Check current unbilled usage, overdue amounts, and credit limit on Maxis Care or the Maxis app to ensure sufficient credit for roaming.

  • If you see "No Service" or "Searching" in the status bar, reset your network settings. Go to: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Note: This will also reset Wi-Fi networks, passwords, mobile data settings, and VPN/APN settings.

If You Can’t Use Data Roaming

    • Restarted your device.
    • Activated international roaming service.
    • Confirmed roaming availability in your location.
    • Turned off airplane mode.
    • Your account is not barred.
    • You can make calls and send SMS.
  • Check Welcome Message

Refer to the message received from Maxis upon arrival for details:

    • Verify connection to local roaming partners.
    • Check roaming and data roaming availability. Some countries (like Myanmar) may not allow data roaming, and local authorities may block roaming in certain areas of South Thailand.
    • Data roaming may be blocked due to high costs in some countries to prevent unawareness of charges.
  • If none of the above reasons apply and data roaming still doesn’t work, call the international roaming care number *123# from your Maxis mobile.
