GenAI for Good: Nurturing the Next Generation of STEM leaders Through MJD 2024

Video: Misi Jelajah Digital (MJD) 2024 Winners (Secondary)

Since its inception in 2021, Maxis eKelas has been inspiring school students to explore STEM opportunities through its annual competition, Misi Jelajah Digital (MJD). This year’s theme, “GenAI for Good,” encouraged students to creatively use Generative AI (GenAI) to address global challenges inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The competition also explored ethical uses of GenAI while equipping participants with essential skills, including ChatGPT prompt engineering—a foundational tool for leveraging AI effectively.

On 6 December 2024, 30 brilliant finalists from primary and secondary schools presented their ideas to the MJD panel of judges. These students demonstrated how GenAI could transform their visions into reality, blending creativity, technological expertise, and a strong sense of purpose in their compelling presentations.

To fully appreciate the transformative experience MJD offers, let’s hear directly from the students, teachers, and judges who were part of this incredible journey.

Students’ Perspectives

Damia Qistina binti Abdullah, Form 4 student from SMK Teknik Alor Setar shared, “Through the MJD Competition, I learned to use AI to generate creative ideas and to search for information more efficiently.” Meanwhile, Velvet Grace AK Benjamin Annau, Form 5 student from SMK Jalan Arang said, “MJD helped me gain a better understanding of using digital technology. I learned to create posters to raise awareness about current information.”

Teachers’ Insights

Pn. Faezah Noor binti Kamsuri from SK Seri Saujana noted, “The introduction of AI and technology in education has made it easier for students to understand and learn more quickly when integrated into lessons. Programs like MJD not only help students deepen their knowledge in technology but also successfully spark their enthusiasm and interest in learning.”

Judges’ Feedback

The judges were impressed by the students’ work. En. Fadzli Anuar, Director, K-12, Talent & Capability Digital Enablers Division, MDEC, commented, “They demonstrated a clear understanding of the selected SDG goals and translated them into meaningful designs. Many localized their content to reflect current issues in Malaysia. Notably, they showed great skill in crafting prompts to generate impactful posters and captions.”

Pn Asrifah Binti Amirul, SISC+ Sains & Matematik Officer, PPD Kuala Penyu, Sabah, Ministry of Education Malaysia, remarked, “Exposure as early as the primary school level is a commendable effort. Programs like Maxis eKelas support student development, especially in nurturing creativity and honing critical thinking skills to solve learning challenges. Congratulations! Initiatives like Maxis eKelas should be continued.”

The Impact of MJD

Hearing these success stories and witnessing the skills students gained through eKelas underscores the program’s positive and lasting impact. These young talents amazed us with their creativity and dedication to their STEM projects, proving that the future is bright with such innovative minds leading the way.

At Maxis, we remain committed to empowering the next generation with digital skills and opportunities. The journey of MJD continues to inspire us all, making STEM not just a field of study but a platform for real-world solutions and meaningful change.
