Creativity And Innovation On Full Display At Maxis Cyberkids Challenge 2014
Continuing its efforts in empowering students with technology, Maxis today recognised the participants of the Maxis Cyberkids Challenge 2014 for their creativity and innovation by using ICT tools. The Challenge, which took place in Kuala Lumpur from 2 - 3 December, is the culmination of the Maxis Cyberkids Camps held throughout the year across the country.
A total of 10 schools participated in the camps, where they were given an opportunity to showcase their creativity by developing and promoting ICT-related projects to benefit their schools. During the Challenge, the Top 8 schools were required to showcase their knowledge and skills learned during the camps, live, by developing applications within the stipulated time given. The schools were judged based on their activities at the school level and their performance during the Challenge, and the school with the highest overall score would be crowned the winner.
The 10 participating schools comprised five special needs schools from both the primary and secondary level, as well as five national secondary schools. The special needs schools were SKPK Kg Baharu in KL, SKPK Jalan Peel in KL, SKPK Alor Setar, Kedah, SMPK (V) Indahpura, Johor and SMPK Persekutuan Pulau Pinang. The secondary schools comprised of SMK Bandar Sri Damansara 2 in KL, SMK Dato’ Bentara Dalam, Johor, SMK Bukit Jambul, Penang, SMK Abu Bakar Al-Baqir, Perak and SMK Dato’ Undang Musa Al-Haj, Negeri Sembilan.
The winners of the Maxis Cyberkids Challenge 2014 were SMK Abu Bakar Al-Baqir, Perak, who won in the Secondary School Category for their ‘Malaysian History’ app, which offers a fun way to learn about Malaysian history through interactive quizzes and fact searches. In the Special Needs School Category (Secondary), SMPK Vokasional Indahpura, Johor, came out tops for their fun and colourful ‘doughnut recipe’ app. SKPK Jalan Peel, KL won in the Special Needs Primary School Category for a shortfilm on Merdeka Day. SMK Dato’ Bentara Dalam, Johor was named the winner in the Best Video Category (Open), for their stop-go animation of the ‘Snakes’ game. The Best Mobile App went to SMK Bandar Sri Damansara 2, Selangor, for their student attendance online system, created for both teachers and students to monitor attendance.

Our Maxis Cyberkids programme is a perfect example of how we are empowering the younger generation to use technology, be innovative and be creative. We are proud to see these kids doing so well and having the opportunity to be technology enablers by sharing their knowledge with their schools and even surrounding communities,” said Raja Tan Sri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, Maxis’ Chairman, who presented the prizes to the winners.
The Maxis Cyberkids Programme introduced in 2002, has reached out to 9,079 students and teachers, as well as to 1,525 schools throughout the country. In 2012, in conjunction with the programme’s 10th anniversary, Maxis took the camps to special needs schools for the first time. Further to that, Maxis extended the Cyberkids programme to its own employees by tailoring the Maxis Cyberkids camps modules.
