Maxis Launches Flagship Corporate Responsibility Programme, Maxis eKelas

Today, Maxis took a significant step in its journey to mainstream digital education for Malaysians with the launch of Maxis eKelas, its brand new Corporate Responsibility programme. Leveraging on technology and the Internet, eKelas is an after-school digital learning initiative that aims to improve the academic performance of students in rural and urban poor communities in Malaysia. Its focus is on three critical subjects - Science, Mathematics and English - for Form 1, 2 and 3 students.

eKelas brings learning in a fun, vibrant and engaging way using highly interactive digital content, in line with the Malaysian School Syllabus. Designed to remove distance as a barrier for education, eKelas also offers technology-enabled teaching, giving students immediate access to experienced teachers via live video tutorials.

“Education is important. It allows us to equip our children to thrive in the future and give them the highest chance to live up to their fullest potential. Through technology, we will be able to provide students with interactive educational support and eKelas is making remote learning a reality for students. We are proud to be the first company to bring e-learning as a structured, after-school learning programme to Pusat Internet 1Malaysia,” said Mariam Bevi Batcha, Maxis’ Head of Corporate Affairs.

Leading up to the launch, Maxis had been piloting eKelas for the past one year at 10 Pusat Internet 1Malaysia under Maxis’ care in Kedah, Kelantan, Selangor, Putrajaya, Sarawak and Negeri Sembilan. During the pilot, Maxis reached out to about 1,200 students in terms of class population and delivered a total of 450 hours of live tutorials for the three core subjects.

eKelas is not just about lessons; it is also about fun and exciting activities such as group work, quizzes, competitions, holiday camp and motivational talks. These activities are conducted by passionate and committed volunteers from Maxis itself.

YBhg. Dato’ Mohd Ali Hanafiah, Chief Sector, Communications and Digital Ecosystem Cluster of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), launched Maxis eKelas with a successful attendance of 45 eKelas students who took part in the pilot, parents and programme partners.

Following the launch of eKelas, Maxis plans to extend the programme to all 118 Pusat Internet 1Malaysia (PI1M) under Maxis’ care, with the aim of reaching 100,000 students over the next five years. PI1Ms are digital hubs in rural and urban areas that aim to provide Internet services as part of the Government’s efforts to narrow the digital divide between urban and rural populations.
