Maxis showcases fun, immersive and educational side of 5G
- In collaboration with aquariaKLCC, Maxis launches Malaysia’s first 5G Augmented Reality experience with marine life
- Use case is part of 5G Malaysia Demonstration Projects announced by MCMC
- Maxis committed to delivering the best 5G innovation to benefit the people and business in Malaysia as soon as the necessary spectrum is made available
In collaboration with Malaysia’s largest aquarium, aquariaKLCC, Maxis today unveiled Malaysia’s first 5G Augmented Reality (AR) experience with marine life. For the next few months, visitors can take a journey through the ocean floor to experience a fun and engaging side of technology. The one-of-a-kind showcase will also shed light on the benefits of 5G technology for a more immersive experience in creating greater awareness on ocean conservation.
The aquariaKLCC use case is part of the 5G Malaysia Demonstration Projects announced earlier by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to facilitate, develop and foster 5G use cases in a live but controlled environment. Encik Al-Ishsal Ishak, Chairman of MCMC was also present at the launch.
“5G is a network that will power a future of smart solutions, and dramatically change the way we communicate and experience things. While we are still very much in experimentation stages, we are excited at the possibilities of new technologies. Through this engaging experience, we wanted everyone to have a glimpse into the future of how 5G technology can be fun, immersive and educational,” said Morten Bangsgaard, Maxis Chief Technology and Information Officer.
“As Malaysia’s largest aquarium, we provide our visitors a journey of discovery, learning about the diverse biosphere found in Malaysia and the regions beyond. We are excited to be partnering with Maxis to bring this one-of-a-kind Augmented Reality experience right here. We look forward to give our visitors the opportunity to see the effects of what technology can do and hopefully, take away a refreshed learning experience on the importance and value in keeping our oceans clean,” said Dato’ Simon Foong, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Aquawalk Sdn Bhd.
Maxis remains committed to delivering the best 5G innovation to benefit the people and businesses in Malaysia as soon as the necessary spectrum is made available. Concurrently, Maxis is launching several other demonstrations nationwide. The showcase in aquariaKLCC will be the third 5G use case demo, following the Putrajaya showcase in April and IDECS in Kuching held in July 2019. More use cases are expected to be launched, including test-beds in Langkawi and Gamuda Cove.
Maxis 5G Journey
Maxis has long started its 5G journey. Over the last few years, it has been assessing the technology and conducting demo trials in its test lab. Maxis has been upgrading its transport network to support the gigabit speeds and at the same time virtualising its core network elements for flexibility and scalability for the capacity demands of this technology.
In February this year, Maxis and Huawei signed an MoU to cooperate on full-fledged 5G trials. Following this, Maxis commenced the first 5G live trials in the country, where it recorded close to 3Gbps download speeds. Maxis also participated in MCMC’s #5GMalaysia showcase in Putrajaya, demonstrating how 5G can enable Government and corporations to make informed decisions using the technology. In October, Maxis and Huawei signed a landmark agreement for the provisioning of 5G network, an important milestone in Maxis’ 5G journey as it commits to deliver the best 5G innovation to benefit the people and businesses in Malaysia as soon as the necessary spectrum is made available.
